Eco-friendly wallpaper

On the interior walls I’m using a mix of clay plaster and MO drywall. Anywhere that I’m not using plaster, I could use wallpaper. So, I’m on the hunt for eco-friendly, non-toxic wall coverings and there’s actually a lot of options, in both permanent removable categories. Here’s some of the brands I’ve found and what kind of materials callouts to look for:

“Bien Fait feels strongly about the environmental issues and our paper is certified FSC, and PVC free. We print using water based safe inks, totally odor free. We also don’t use any plastic material for wrapping.”

“All of the paper we use is sourced from sustainable forests and responsibly manufactured. When we print it, we do so with our own water based paints, and the finished roll contains no vinyl, meaning that any leftover paper can be easily recycled.”

Juju papers are manufactured in the USA with responsibly-sourced fiber (all USA sourced fiber), and all suppliers adhere to one of the globally recognized forestry or chain of custody programs. The papers are made with elemental chlorine-free fiber.

Burke Decor’s claims:

We have a vast range sustainable wallpaper patterns and styles that will make your home beautiful. Our environmentally friendly wallpaper is vinyl free, resists mold and mildew and is easy to clean and maintain.

I found this Swedish company, Engblad & Co who sources FSC-certified paper, no PVC or harmful solvents and select only water-based inks and finishes. And this nice little phrase:

All to ensure exceptional aesthetic results that are harmless to touch and produce little to no off-gassing.

They go on to make this statement about minimizing waste:

Further, we take every opportunity to reduce energy consumption in the manufacturing of all our wallpaper. From roll production to the actual application of our designs, finding ways minimise waste is always a main consideration. For example, the paper waste from our production facility in Borås is re-purposed by our local district as fuel to help heat the surrounding community.

Pinstripe Floral Black and White by Kate Zaremba

There’s even some removable wallpaper for those who want to keep their options open! Kate Zaremba designs are printed to PVC-free paper. It installs like a giant postage stamp. An interior designer friend of mine has had great success with this kind of application, even on huuuuge walls.

Another option is to pop over to Spoonflower, browse any of their designs (or upload your own) and print to your custom specifications.

The FSC Certified paper has a water-activated adhesive backing and is printed using eco-friendly, water-based latex inks. It claims to be Formaldehyde-, phthalate-, and PVC-free, printed in North Carolina (go local!).

Just learned of a new L.A.-based company called Wallshoppe. I really like some of these papers for the color, pattern and modern options with multiple colorways from which to select. You have to be very careful about the scale of any patterns, and their Instagram has loads of nice examples.

Digitally printed on 100% nontoxic eco friendly paper. Here’s what they say about their papers:

WS Paper and WS Removable Panels are non-woven wallcoverings made of 30% recycled materials and reinforced with natural latex for strength and durability.  Wallshoppe paper is a superior alternative to PVC wallcovering materials.  Its environmentally responsible construction supports LEED credits.  WS Paper and WS Removable Panels are dimensionally stable, tear-resistant, light-fade resistant and can be wiped down with a damp cloth.
